Little Lolita

Finally today, after being here for 9 months, I stopped little Lolita and asked to take a picture of her. She laughed and kept saying in her broken English, “I ugly”. I quickly interrupted her and told her that she was not ugly and I just hugged her while she laughed and nestled into me.

Lolita is a single mother of a 6 yr old boy, Dean. She works 6 days a week and makes roughly $10/day. She always has a smile on her face, a willingness to communicate with me, and has the cutest way of dressing. I asked another friend the other day how old Lolita is and she said that Lolita thinks she is 28 years old. She isn’t sure because her parents never registered her in Honduras. I was also told that she had a horrible upbringing and lives on her own. She just recently took in her 17 year old girl cousin who was kicked out of her home.

Lolita asked me the other day, in Spanish, if there were any organizations in the United States that can help with giving her son toys and books.  I told her that I would start looking into it. If anyone has a great lead on that, please let me know. I have a few organizations that I am researching, but they seem to be more for disaster relief.
