Christians: Tell Me How Trump Reflects Your Jesus?
In the 30 years that I attended organized Christian churches, there were political messages in the sermons on Sunday mornings. In the last church I went to, Christ Church Kirkland, there were actually documents made by the church leadership that was passed out to tell people in the congregation who to vote for. Not only were opinions of the leadership preached from the pulpit regarding who we should vote for, but there were also congregation meetings to inform people how they should vote. In 2000, I remember the rhetoric being that Barak Obama was the Anti-Christ. There were stern warnings to avoid voting for him, or for any Democrat for that matter. We were handed pamphlets that listed everyone we should vote for so that we would assure that Jesus would be pleased.
First of all, I went along with it. I was a follower. I joined everyone else in wanting to be told what to do. This is what most of my life in Christianity looked like. Tell me what to do and I will do it, SO THAT Jesus is pleased with me. I bought into the lie that men and women in church leadership were closer to God and had a direct line to him for my life. I too, bought into the lie that someone else could hear God for me. I believed that if I made my own decisions, then I might backslide or make poor decisions. I believed that if I didn’t follow what the leaders taught, then I would be in sin. It was black and white in those days of my life. Either I was making the right decisions or I was making the wrong decisions. One decision would lead to the approval of church leadership and therefore God, or I was disappointing church leaders and God.
When I left the church, I began thinking for myself. With the mind that God gave me. I began taking responsibility for my choices and my beliefs. When political races came upon the USA, I chose to do my own research and choose for myself who I voted for. I didn’t talk about my decisions with others because it was my decision and I am not one to talk politics. Talking politics is not what lights me up. I understand that it does light others up to talk about it, and I think that is great, especially when people who vote differently can have a civil, kind debate. That’s just not me.
But at this time in our world, especially what is going on in the United States with the UPRISING because unjust killings of black people by our police force AND the degrading, racist-filled rhetoric of our President, I can’t stay silent. I just want to know why so many Christians, can support our president for so long? I mean I can understand why many voted for him because he has brought a change in many aspects of trade and the economy, but for Christians to still stand behind him when he COMPLETELY goes against their greatest model, Jesus, I can only assume they are blindly following. Following without thinking or considering their values or the values of the Bible to which they proclaim is their guide, their lifeline to God, and their mission on earth.
Donald Trump is not kind. He is a bully. He is a narcissist. He pretends to be a Christian. Taking a picture in front of St. John’s church across the street from the White House, posed with a Bible in his hand – tear gas blazing and rubber bullets flying so he could have his photo-op, is just absurd. Did he set this up to quote the Bible for these tumultuous times? Was it even his Bible? Why was he posing with a Bible in front of this church during these times anyway? How did this bring any peace in our country? How was this a move that resembled Christians Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ? Would Jesus pose for a photo-op while he was on his way to the cross?
Christians, can you picture your Jesus doing something like that? Can you imagine your Trump with nothing but his garment and sandals walking around giving love and peace to others? Would Jesus have his Towers and millions?
I believe that people can vote and believe how they want to. It’s our human privilege. It’s our American privilege.
But for the Christians who think that Trump is anything like Christ, or has anything to do with being righteous and loving, I would implore you to reread your Bible. Sit in your quiet time and ask the Holy Spirit to remind you what God values. When Trump speaks, do you hear the humility of Christ? When Trump speaks, do you hear the kindness of Christ? When Trump speaks, do you hear love like Christ had? When Trump speaks, do you hear the purity like Christ? Do you think Jesus would vote for Trump? Does your President Trump even come close to your Savior? Does the President who you so easily defend look anything like the Savior you have given your life to?
If so, please tell me why. I’m curious.
In a time when the world most needs love and hope, where are the Christians? Isn’t this exactly the time they were called for? Jesus spoke of LOVE. Jesus spoke of HUMILITY. Jesus spoke of going after the ONE who was lost of the 100. Jesus spoke of laying down his life for others. Jesus spoke of letting your light SHINE. In Matthew 7, Jesus talks about doing unto others as you would have them do unto you.
In Matthew 5 it is written: Blessed are the poor in spirit…Blessed are they who mourn…Blessed are the meek…Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness…Blessed are the merciful…Blessed are the pure of heart…Blessed are the peacemakers…Blessed are those that are persecuted for the sake of righteousness…Does this describe your POTUS?
This is your time Christians! Let your light SHINE. Get out there and be the hands and feet of Jesus! You have been equipped for SUCH AS TIME AS THIS. The world is waiting for your ACTION. This moment in history is your chance to reveal your Jesus. Isn’t this exactly what he saved you for?
